Coffee lovers will agree: coffee is great but not when it spills on their precious white carpet. This kind of accident can happen, especially if you have just woken up and the caffeine has yet to kick in and do its job. Don’t panic and don’t call the carpet doctor just yet. Follow these tips for removing coffee stains, whether black or with cream, from your carpet.

Important:

Remember to clean the spill immediately. Time is of the essence because the longer you delay the harder it would be to remove the stain. If possible, clean up immediately if you don’t want a permanent visual reminder of your coffee accident.

Things you will need:

White foam shaving cream
Mild soap or bleach-free dish detergent
Baking soda
Vinegar
Water
Spray bottle (optional)
Paper towels or soft cloth

Follow these steps:

If the spill is new, blot the area using paper towels or soft cloth to absorb as much of the liquid as possible. Start from the outside towards the middle so the stain wouldn’t spread. Then, apply plain water on the stain and blot. Repeat this process until you have remove much or all of the coffee.

If you still see the stain, put a mild soap or detergent on the area and gently rub it onto the carpet fibres between your fingers. Don’t push down as you rub so as not to push the stain further into the fibres. Rinse by spraying with water and blot to dry.

If some staining still remains, rub the foamy shaving cream gently on the area using a clean cloth. Blot to remove. Repeat until the stain is no more. Spray with water to rinse and blot with a clean cloth.

For stubborn stain, mix baking soda and water until the consistency becomes toothpaste-like. Apply the paste on the stain and leave to dry. After it dries, vacuum to remove the paste. Spray the area with a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water. Remove by blotting with clean cloth. Repeat until the stain totally disappears.

When you have successfully removed the stain, draw out the last bit of water remaining by laying paper towels over the wet area. Step on it to absorb the water or place a heavy on top and leave it for two hours. Make sure the area is completely dry. Lastly, vacuum the area to return the carpet to its original texture.

Before applying any of the solution for coffee stain removal, try it first on a small hidden section of the carpet to make sure it will not destroy the colour or texture of your carpet.
